During our recent visit to Beirut, we had the opportunity to meet ‘Ali,’ a 10-year-old boy. Ali spends his days collecting plastic in the crowded streets of Beirut. Despite his young age, Ali does not go to school like most children his age. Instead, he works diligently collecting plastic to sell it to support his family.
Ali’s story is just one of the heartbreaking stories resulting from the education crisis in Lebanon. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), there are approximately 700,000 students like Ali who have been forced to leave school and are deprived of the opportunity to receive an education. These young minds, full of potential, face an uncertain future in a country grappling with challenges that have had a profound impact on its youth.
